Wellington ends CVL tourney run

The Wellington Crusaders kept their state tournament hopes alive as they defeated the CVL All-Stars 12-6 in consolation bracket play on Saturday in the Kansas State 15U Babe Ruth Tournament in Paola.

WLH0043 Wellington jumped to a 6-0 lead after one inning and increased the lead to 9-0 after two innings, on the strength of three hits in each inning. CVL was able to push across a run in the top of the third inning on one hit, but Wellington answered with a single run in the bottom of the inning.

After CVL went scoreless in the fourth, Wellington all but iced the game in the bottom of the inning pushing across two more runs on one hit to open a 12-1 lead. Cottonwood Valley made a bit of a comeback in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring two in the fifth on two hits and three in the sixth on three hits, but they would come no closer.

The win gave Wellington the chance to play a second game on the day as they advanced to take on Lakin in the final game of the Saturday session.

The Lakin All Stars, continued to shake off the effects of their opening round, no-hit defeat at the hands of host Paola, by defeating the Mid-Kansas All Stars 11-5 in consolation bracket action in the Kansas State 15U Babe Ruth Tournament in Paola on Saturday.

WLH0599 Lakin scored eight runs in the first three innings, on the strength of a nine hit attack, to open a 8-4 lead on Mid Kansas. Kevin Dasenbrock, Reno Armstrong, Dalton Schalberg, Shane Davidson, Gilbert Magauenes, and Bryant Miller all plated runs during the opening three innings.

Mid Kansas could manage only an additional single run in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 8-5, while Lakin would add one run in the top of the sixth and three more in the top of the seventh for the final margin. Lakin had hits in six of seven innings in route to a 14 hit game.

The win gives Lakin a second game on the day as they advance to play Wellington in the night cap.

Lakin advances over Mid Kansas

Independence advanced to the Championship game of the Kansas State 15U Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament by downing host Paola on Saturday. The game became a slug fest late, as Independence came from behind for the second straight day to advance.

WLH0790 The improbable loss came after the Panthers had opened a 17-10 lead on Independence in the middle of the sixth inning. The Panthers had broken open a tie game with seven runs in the top half of the fourth inning to take an 11-4 lead. Paola added three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth, while Indy countered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and four in the bottom of the fifth.

Easton Julian, Dustin Oliver and Zach Snodgrass lead off the sixth for Indy by reaching and scoring. After Shane Moore grounded out, Dalton Schaffer reached base before Nick Long struck out for the second out of the inning. Indy then sent six more batters to the plate, with five scoring to give Indy a 19-17 lead. The Panthers Jeremiah Daniels lead off and advanced to third base, but was unable to score and Indy sealed the comeback victory.

The loss dropped Paola to the consolation bracket final against Lakin in the first game on Sunday afternoon.

Independence outlasts Paola 19-17

Lakin will get a chance to redeem itself against Paola, as they advanced to the consolation bracket final with a 2-1, extra inning win late Saturday night in the Kansas State 15U Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament.

WLH0624 Wellington grabbed a 1-0 lead with two out in the second inning, as Zach Parent scored to give Wellington the lead. Wellington had two hits in the first two innings, but would get only one more hit and advance only three more baserunners to scoring position the remainder of the game. Lakin fared little better as they were held without a hit through four innings. Finally in the bottom of the fifth they got their first hit and when Cody Kinnier scored, the game was tied at 1-1. It remained that way until the bottom of the eighth when Gilbert Magauenes reached base safely and scored two batters later with the walk-off, winning run.

Lakin and Paola squared off in the first round with the Panthers taking a 10-0 no-hit victory of Lakin. The winner will take on Independence for the title.
