Panthers place six in top six at tournament
The Paola Panther Wrestlers placed ninth in the Silver Lake Tournament on Saturday, February 7, 2009. The Panthers placed six wrestlers in the top six places in the event, but none reached the championship round of the tournament.
Wrestling at the 112 pound weight class, Taylor Harris finished fourth, falling in the consolation final to Josh Thoele of Prairie View. Harris opened his tournament by dropping his first round match to eventual champion Bret Simons of Seaman. Harris then defeated Justin Watson of Silver Lake to advance to the consolation final.
Tanner Staats, in the 125 pound class also finished fourth, losing to Kevin Taylor of Silver Lake in the consolation final. Staats opened the tournament by defeating Javon Haines of Leavenworth before losing to Kevin Taylor of Silver Lake and then defeating Tyler Brown of Prairie View and Mark Smith of Rossville to advance to the consolation final.
In the 275 pound class, Cale Karigan also dropped the consolation final to finish fourth in his weight class, by fallingg to Michael Patenaude of Clay Center. Karigan opened with a loss to Bryce Seljestad of Wamego before defeating Will Bartlett of Atchison, Nate Phillips of Louisburg and then getting revenge for his opening round match, by defeating Seljestad in a re-match to advance to the consolation final.
At 135 pounds, Mitch Mosley took the fifth place spot overall by defeating Bronson Moylan of Prairie View. Mosley opened with a loss to Trent Hoover of Salina South and then defeated Colin Calhoun of Atchison and Adam Tignor of Seaman before losing to Sheldon Graves of Rossville to put him in the fifth place match.
Tyler Henness also placed fifth, by defeating Nicholas McKenzie of Rossville in the 145 pound class. Henness opened with a victory over McKenzie and then fell to Kyle Wichman of Silver Lake in his second match. Henness was defeated by Derek Mathia of Louisburg before wrestling and defeating McKenzie for the second time to take the fifth place spot.
In the 215 pound class, Spencer Trumbley fell to Eric Cox of Wabaunsee in the fifth place match. Trumbley opened with a loss to Rick Singer of Seaman and then defeated Austin Thomas of Clay Center and Kyle Smith of Silver Lake before falling to Josh Bush of Leavenworth to fall to the fifth place match.
Other Panther wrestlers competing were Seth Heliker who dropped two matches in the 152 pound class, first to Taylor Anderson of Salina South and to Sam Blindt of Seaman, and in the 140 pound class, Eric Timpe opened with a win over Chris Bird of Rossville, before losing to Rusty Yarrow of Clay Center and Michael Kircher of Louisburg.
The Panthers will be in action twice this week, hosting a dual meet with the annual senior night recognitions on Thursday, and then traveling to Spring Hill to take part in the Frontier League Tournament on Saturday.
