McKinney takes second at Eudora
The Paola Panther Wrestlers took part in the very difficult, 24 team Eudora Invitational Wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday, December 11 & 12, 2009. The Panthers placed six wrestlers in the top eight in their weight classes, including a second place finish by Dylan McKinney in the 130 pound class. The Panthers 103.5 points on the day were good enough for 17th place, one spot behind the Louisburg Wildcats.
“It was a bear of a tournament,” said Panthers Head Coach Russ Hermreck. “All of our kids competed very hard and it was a good test for them this early in the season.”
Tyler Henness was the next highest finisher for the Panthers, placing sixth in the 160 pound class. He was followed by a host of team mates in seventh place, including Brian Ebeling at 103 pounds, Tanner Staats at 135 pounds, and Spencer Trumbley at 215 pounds. Rounding out the Panthers in the top eight was Joe Pomatto who finished eighth at 215 pounds.
Hermreck said he was pleased with the teams conditioning and the amount of effort the squad displayed over the two day tournament. He went on to say he felt the most outstanding thing about his squad this year is that they are eager to learn and eager to work, saying that combination alone is a perfect recipe for great things to come.
“We have certain areas that were exploited as a team, and we need to address these areas immediately,” Hermreck said. “We are going to take our mistakes to the drawing board and focus on eliminating some of our mental mistakes that are still costing us several matches per tournament.”
The Panthers will have plenty of time to work on those mistakes, as they are off through the holidays, and will return to the mat on January 6, 2010 when they take on the Spring Hill Broncos in dual action at Paola.
