Auten adds state times; relays qualify
It was another big day for the Osawatomie-Paola boys swim team, as they saw Jared Auten post three more state qualifying times, and two relay teams post qualifying times, while a third relay missed a qualifying time by about four seconds. The times came Tuesday afternoon, December 8, 2009 at the Jaguar Invitational, hosted by Blue Valley West High School. The Oz.-Pa. boys finished in third place overall with 104 points, behind West (258) and St. Thomas Aquinas (120), but if points for diving, events which the team does not compete in, are factored out, the squad finished just one point behind Aquinas.
In only the second meet of the season, Auten has now put his name in the state program for five events. He started his qualifying blitz in the second event of the day, the 200 freestyle, where he blazed to a second place finish overall, and set a new school record with a time of 1:57.79 which also qualified him for the state championships in that event.
“The big news is Jared,” said Head Coach Sarah Dorsett. “Qualifying for more events just gives him more options to score points at the state meet, providing he makes it to the finals.”
Later in the meet, he joined team mate Alex Weatherbie in the 50 free and 100 free events. Weatherbie had posted qualifying times in both those events last Saturday at Coffeyville. Weatherbie was solid again in the 50 free, winning that event.
The team also posted state qualifying times in two relay events, the 200 free relay team of Auten, Daniel Dorsett, Jon Hilliard and Alex Weatherbie qualified with a second place finish in a time of 1:38.17. The team will swim for Osawatomie High School in the state event, as state rules state that on combined teams, relay teams must all be from the same school, although the team can qualify using a majority of swimmers from the same school. Consequently in this event, Alex Weatherbie will not swim with this team in the state meet, as he is from Paola High School.
In the final event of the day, the 400 free relay team of Auten, Gus Hart, Brint Hastert, and Weatherbie also took second in a time of 3:41.14 which was good enough to qualify the team for Paola High School for the state meet, as was the case with the 200 free relay team, Auten will have to be replaced with a Paola High School swimmer for the state meet.
“I am very pleased that rookie Brint Hastert, a Paola Senior, decided to swim this year,” Dorsett said. “He has some summer swim experience, but he must have been hiding his talent. He is very important in these relays qualifying for state.”
In the meet’s first event, the team of Daniel Dorsett, Hastert, Hart and Weatherbie took third place and finished just four seconds off the state qualifying pace, this team would qualify for Paola High School. The squad is working hard to qualify both this team and a team of Osawatomie swimmers, and with several meets to go, one or both should qualify.
The team will return to the pool for practice and will host one more meet before the holiday break on December 17, 2009 at the Osawatomie YMCA Pool. Dorsett is please with her team’s performance through the first two events of the season, but sees a long journey of improvement before the February trip to state.
“The challenge for all state qualifiers will be to improve times and improve their chances of making it to finals,” Dorsett said. “But now, it’s back to the pool, make every practice, every set, every rep off the blocks count.”
