Dorsett & 200 free relay state bound
The list of Osawatomie-Paola swim team members with “state qualifier” on their resume is growing, as Daniel Dorsett made the cut in the 100 yard backstroke, and the 200 yard free relay team of Alex Weatherbie, Brint Hastert, Gus Hart and Jared Auten qualified Paola High School in that event. The 200 yard medley relay team of Auten, Weatherbie, Dorsett and Michael Del Valle came within an eyelash of qualifying, needing to shave less than five tenths of a second from their time.
“The highlight of the meet was that Daniel qualified in the 100 yard backstroke and the Paola team qualified in the 200 free relay,” said Head Coach Sarah Dorsett. “We almost qualified the 200 Medley Relay for Osawatomie, the guys shaved 1.5 seconds off their last time, so they should be able to do it.”
Dorsett has been close to qualifying this season, and missed the qualification mark by less than two seconds the last time he took the pool. This time he hit the finish line in a time of 1:02.74 which put him in the state event.
The 200 free relay team of Weatherbie, Hastert, Hart and Auten finished second in the event with a time of 1:39.64, and event though they would have liked to win, the time was under state qualification time, punching their tickets to the state meet in February.
The 200 medley relay team still has some work to do, as they will need to shave that last half second off their time in order to be invited to the state event. The team of Auten, Weatherbie, Dorsett and Del Valle finished third in the race with a time of 1:53.89 which is just a whisker from a qualifying time.
There were some fast times turned in at the event, which featured Olathe Northwest, Shanee Mission West and Blue Valley West High Schools. The Osawatomie-Paola team finished third in the meet with 406 points, behind Northwest which racked up an impressive 771 points. Shawnee Mission West barely edged out Oz-Pa for second with 419 points and Blue Valley West was fourth with 348 points.
